Factors and Zeroes 

 

A zero of a parabola is another name for the point in which the parabola crosses the x- axis.  

The x- intercept is found when y must be set to 0 (y=0)

Key points

  • When the (a) value changes the zeroes do not change

  • When the (a) value changes the axis of symmetry does not change

  • When the (a) value changes the optimal value does change

 

Expanding Factored Form

If it is necessary to change the factored equation to standard form, expanding is needed.

Example: Expand (x+2)(x+4)

  • Multiply everything in the first bracket to everything in the seconf braket : x²+4x+2x+8

  • Collect like terms : x²+6x+8=standard form

Common Factoring

When you find the factors of two or more numbers, and then find some factors are the same, then they are the "common factors". For instance, 2 is a common factor of 4 and 6. 
Factoring is basically expandning an expression into a multiplication of simpler expressions.

  • While factoring make sure you find the greatest common factor

  • Example: Factor (12y²+6y)

The greatest common factor is 3y since 12y² and 6y share the variable y.

  • (3x4 y2+ 2x3 y)

  • 3y (4y+2)=Final factor

Finding the x interecepts is a easy procedure, there is an example shown below.

1: Factor the following:

2x2+7x+6

(2x+2)(x+3)

2: Set the value of each braket to 0

0=2x+2     0=x+3

3: Isolate to find x

-2=2x       -3=x

-2/2=x      (-3,0)

-1=x

(-1,0)

4: You have found the x-intercepts.
